Apple To Offer Over-The-Air Updates For iOS 5?

Apple will reportedly begin offering over-the-air firmware updates after the release of iOS 5.0, according to 9to5Mac.

Multiple sources say the new feature will debut in iOS 5, meaning iOS 5 will not come over-the-air but following point updates to it will. Just like tethering in iOS 3, Apple has the technology but cannot just unleash it everywhere. Apple and Verizon Wireless are said to have been in talks over these wireless software updates since early this year. Sources could not comment on whether or not Apple is negotiating similar deals with AT&T or international iPhone carriers.

Apple is expected to unveil iOS 5 at WWDC 2011.

Turn Your iPhone Into A Speed Radar

Kaiser & Kaiser has announced speedClock 2.0 for iPhone 4, a significant update to their utility that uses the device's built-in video camera to automatically measure the speed of any object, the distance to any point, and lap times of racers. Employing the device's accelerometer or size comparisons establishes distance. Speed and laps are measured using the motion sensing of the video camera, timing the interval between the object entering and leaving the frame. The updated version features: snapshot of measurement, stadimeter distance tool, improved accuracy, and optimized detection algorithms.

Because it relies for its operation on a built-in video camera, the app is presently compatible only with iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4, iPad 2, and iPod touch 4.

speedClock makes it easy to measure the speed of cars, boats, skaters, skiers, cyclists, running dogs, model cars, footballs, etc. The user simply holds up their iPhone, and allows the app to automatically measure the speed of any object passing through the frame of the viewing screen. Sensitivity controls are included to compensate for very large or small objects, background motion, camera shake, or rapid cyclical motion. All distance measurements can be calculated and displayed in feet or meters. New in version 2.0 is the ability to take a picture and measure speed simultaneously. Along with the new auto-reset function, users can set up the iPhone to continuously measure the speed and save an image of everything that passes.

Feature Highlights:
* Accurately measure speed, distance, or lap times
* Calculate and display distances in meters or feet
* Video motion-sensing automatically measures speed
* Sensitivity controls for optimal measurement in difficult conditions
* Carry a miniature radar gun, lap timer, and range finder in your pocket

The first step in making a speed measurement is getting a good estimate of the distance between the user and the point through which the object will travel. This can be estimated and entered manually (poor accuracy), measured with a measuring tape and entered manually (excellent accuracy), or measured automatically using the app (good accuracy). The user enters their height and then tilts the device to exactly match the horizontal line on the screen with the point on the ground to be measured. The closer the point the larger the angle, as measured by the accelerometer. This is similar in operation to a navigational sextant. New in version 2.0 is an improvement to this clinometer distance tool. Now, users can use the zoom capabilities of the camera, making alignment with a horizontal line easier and more accurate.

Also new in version 2.0 is a second, complementary distance measurement tool: a stadimeter. Similar to an optical rangefinder, it uses the size of a known object (e.g. the height of a person) to calculate the distance. The user sets the size, then employs the two sliders to zoom in and adjust the two arrows so they point to the ends of the object.

The second step in making a speed measurement is to enter the direction of movement of the object, left to right, or right to left. Holding the viewer in either orientation, the user presses Reset and the app will automatically display the speed of the object that passes through its view. Speeds are displayed in large red numerals using a thematic LCD font. In addition to setting the direction of movement, the Settings panel allows adjustment of motion-sensing sensitivity. The user may also set the speed result to be displayed as: m/s, km/h, mph, ft/s, knots, or seconds (independent of the distance). Version 2.0 includes an indicator light that displays the accuracy of the measurement.

speedClock opens with five buttons displayed: Speed (of an object moving across the screen), Time (between repeated occurrences of an object moving across the screen, e.g. runners on a track, including lap number, lap time, and total time), and two buttons for the Distance (between the user and the object). The fifth button, Tips, includes complete instructions and useful tips for maximizing the accuracy of the app. For example, the user is advised to move backwards if the measuring time is to short and the indicator light shows red.

New in Version 2.0:
* Snapshot to document the measurement
* Stadimeter distance tool
* Improved accuracy
* Optimized detection algorithms to better handle small objects, especially on iPhone 4
* Auto-reset, enables user to set up the iPhone to automatically measure the speed and save an image of everything that passes
* Indicator light that shows the accuracy of the measurement
* Zooming capabilities in the clinometer distance tool

"speedClock makes it easy to accurately measure people or objects as they pass by," stated company Owner Sten Kaiser. "Athletes, animals, vehicles, etc. can have their speed measured, and lap times recorded automatically."

Pricing and Availability:
speedClock 2.0 is $0.99 (USD) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Utilities category. Review copies are available upon request.

iOS 4.3 Arrives Ahead Of Schedule

(Credit: Screenshot by Josh Lowensohn/CNET)

Apple today released its iOS 4.3 software ahead of schedule.

The software, which was originally set to be released on Friday to coincide with the launch of the iPad 2, went out to users as an update from within Apple's iTunes software this morning.

New features in iOS 4.3 (photos)

Among the new features are support for Wi-Fi hot spots on GSM iPhones, video streaming through Apple's AirPlay technology, iTunes Home Sharing, and improved JavaScript performance in Safari. iPad users also get a new option within the settings menu that lets them turn the iPad's side switch into either a mute switch or a screen orientation lock--functionality the company had changed with the release of iOS 4.2.

iOS 4.3 was unveiled during the iPad 2 press briefing earlier this month, though developers got their hands on the first beta of the software in January. Apple released a Gold Master copy of the software just last week.

The new software is the first iOS update to leave out the iPhone 3G from the list of devices that Apple will support. Joining the 3G in devices that won't be eligible for the update include the original iPhone, as well as the first- and second-generation iPod Touch.

Along with iOS 4.3 for iOS devices, the Apple TV received a software update today that adds Major League Baseball's MLB.TV streaming service, as well as the National Basketball Association's League Pass. Both subscription services work in a similar fashion to Netflix, with users entering in their existing account credentials to gain access. That update only goes out to users with the latest version of Apple TV.

Stay tuned for our hands-on with how the hot-spot feature performs on the GSM iPhone.

Apple Announces iPad 2: A5 Dual Core, 2 Cameras, Thinner

As expected, Apple announced the next generation of its popular tablet device at a media event today. The iPad 2 will have the same 9.7-inch display but will be 33% thinner than the previous model. It will have front-facing and rear-facing cameras and Apple's new 1GHz dual-core A5 processor.

“With more than 15 million iPads sold, iPad has defined an entirely new category of mobile devices,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “While others have been scrambling to copy the first generation iPad, we’re launching iPad 2, which moves the bar far ahead of the competition and will likely cause them to go back to the drawing boards yet again.”

With the addition of cameras, the next-generation iPad will be capable of making FaceTime calls with other FaceTime-capable devices. The rear-facing camera can capture 720p HD video. Despite its thinner casing, the iPad 2 will have the same battery life as the first generation of 10 hours and 30 days of stand-by time.
The 3G models of the iPad 2 will be compatible with the GSM networks of AT&T and other carriers as well as Verizon's CDMA network. The versions compatible with Verizon's network will be sold in the U.S. only.

Apple has designed new accessories for the next-generation iPad, including cases called Smart Covers and an HDMI adapter. The Smart Covers will attach magnetically to the iPad 2 and will automatically wake the device when opened and put it to sleep when closed.
The iPad 2 will run iOS 4.3 which will be released for other iOS devices on March 11.
The iPad 2 will be available starting March 11 in the U.S. and will come in two colors: white and black. Pricing and capacities have not changed from the first generation of the iPad with the Wi-Fi models coming in at $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, and $699 for 64GB. The Wi-Fi + 3G models will cost $629 for 16GB, $729 for 32GB, and $829 for 64GB.

Just bought this last night and I have to say I am really impressed. Great game. The circular design really changes things a LOT on the brick breaking genre. Way more than I thought it would. – MadeTheSwitch

Away from the crisp edginess of the ingame visuals, the menus and user interface portray the detective's desk and offer up a wonderfully tactile, touchy feel with the paperwork files and his pager the route through to the game's various sections. – apptilt

First Screenshots of Opera Browser for iPad

Softpedia has posted the first screenshots of Opera's web browser for the iPad. Their gadgets editor, Alex Vochin, describes the browser as blazingly fast.

Or so says our guy, who couldn't get enough of pinching to zoom in and out of web pages as he gave the web browser a quick spin.

Visual tabs allow users to have several web pages open concurrently and quickly switch between them using tabs. Each tab allows users to preview a thumbnail, as well as the page title and icon for each web page they have open.

Where the default touchscreen keyboard provides a less-than-optimal user experience, users can take advantage of Opera’s virtual keyboard to type and edit information without having to leave the page they are viewing.

You can take a look at some screenshots below or hit the link for more info.

Untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak Tool Released

Although an iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak has been around for a couple months, it came with a catch: if you ever had to reboot your device, you'd have to connect (i.e. tether) it to your computer in order to start using it again.

That's a semi-major inconvenience; if your battery died while you were on the go, you wouldn't be able to use your iPhone, iPod, or iPad again (even if recharged) until you got back to your PC.

Needless to say, people have been itching to get their hands on an "untethered" jailbreak (one that could survive a reboot). The good news: the untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak was just released by GreenPois0n. The bad news: it's Mac-only for the moment, and GreenPois0n's site is currently offline.

Because I'm in the Windows camp, I haven't been able to test the jailbreak myself. And I'm not sure I want to, if only because iOS 4.3 is just around the corner. I will admit I'm eager to get back to using MyWi, the no-monthly-fee hot spot app. But that's pretty much my only motivation for jailbreaking at all.

If you don't want to wait for GreenPois0n to get back online, the jailbreak tool is available via Bittorrent. Keep in mind this is the Mac version; I'm not sure when a Windows version will surface.

As with any such tool, use it at your own risk. In most cases it's fairly easy to "un-jailbreak" a device, to restore it to its original, Apple-sanctioned state, but there's always a chance you could brick your baby.

Want to learn more about all this? Here's a great breakdown of the differences between tethered and untethered jailbreaks.

If you're a Mac user and you're able to snag the tool, hit the comments and let me know how it worked out. For everyone else, let me know your thoughts on the whole jailbreak scene. Worth it? Or not?
